Curtis VI : Yellow Horse

From the series of my work on North American Indians, based on a photograph of Edward Curtis of 1903. Yellow horse is a Yanktonai indian. The Yanktonai are a smaller group of indians part of the Dakota. Their hunting grounds extend from Red river to the Missouri. This people live(d) in North Dakota.
Given the poor quality of the original sepia photograph and the very dark surroundings, it is very hard to get detail right. Hence a lot of fantasy is used, I do not claim that the clothing is 100% historically correct.

NL- Geel Paard, een indiaan van de Yanktonai. De Yanktonai zijn een kleine stam, behorend tot de Yankton, onderdeel van de Dakota indianen. In hun taal betekent ihanke ‘einde,’ tonwan ‘dorp’. Na is een verkleinwoord: Yanktonai betekent dus zoiets als ‘dorpje op het einde’.
De dramatische belichting in de foto’s van Curtis, verbergt veel details in de schaduw van donkere sepiakleuren. Ik heb dus nogal wat fantasie nodig voor de ontbrekende stukken. De kleding is een artistiek complement van het portret en zeker geïnspireerd op de werkelijkheid, maar ik claim niet dat ze cultuurhistorisch correct weergegeven wordt.
