Saudade

Oil on cardboard/canvas, 60cm x 80cm (March 2017).

Orangutan. There is a sadness and resignation in the eyes of our brother. I tried to catch this in the gaze, and I notice that some fear has sneeked in as well. The most difficult part was the skin underneath the eyes. The bigger strokes all around the face away from the centre (hopefully) add to the power of the expression. The white part at the right edge was introduced to break the symmetry.

NL- Orang Oetan : er zit grote droefheid en gelatenheid verscholen in de ogen van vriend aap. Ik heb getracht dit te vatten in zijn blik, nu merk ik dat er ook een beetje angst is bij ingeslopen. Het moeilijkste stuk vond ik de huid onder de ogen. De borstelstreken die als stralen vanuit het centrum weglopen dragen (hopelijk) bij tot de kracht van het gezicht. De witte streken rechts tegen de kant, werden later toegevoegd om de symmetrie te breken.
